Povzetek predavanja:

Pseudomonas syringaepv. actinidiae (Psa), the causal agent of bacterial canker of kiwifruit, has in a very short period of time spread to most of the major kiwifruit-producing countries around the world. In New Zealand, this pathogen threatened the economic viability of growingActinidia deliciosa (green-fleshed kiwifruit) and A. chinensis (yellow-fleshed kiwifruit). This economic threat was the initial drive for international collaborations on Psa. Today, the New Zealand kiwifruit industry is again a profitable industry thanks to the planting or grafting of a new cultivar of A. chinensis ‘Zesy002’ (commonly known as Gold3) which much less susceptible than the previous one: ‘Hort16A’.  In addition, in the last two years we have made very good progress in understanding the pathogen. However, the remaining questions are increasingly complex and to answer them will require a range of skills and expertise which are rarely, if ever, found in one laboratory or one institute. More and more such studies need to be carried out by collaborations including international collaborations. In this lecture two projects which have been conducted as collaborations between scientists with different fields of expertise and from different countries will be presented. The first project is about the taxonomy of Psa and how some economic aspects of the kiwifruit industry are affected by it. The second is about control and utilising our understanding of how Psa modifies the plant hormonal balance for its benefit, to reduce the incidence of this disease.

Predavanje bo potekalo v angleškem jeziku.
